PPD1

PPD1 - Wednesday 21st April

Having been briefed for the new module PPD1, we were paired up with our 3rd year to become their assistant for the next few weeks.

I started by getting shown the 3rd year studio which looked very hectic as they are all piecing together their final collections and pieces. Edric (my 3rd year) then took me down to the printing rooms to show me what he has been doing so far. I then got asked to steam and wash his fabric which was quite exciting. I have had my induction but haven't got round to doing anything down there but will definitely be useful for the rest of my time at uni.

Edric then asked me to go collect a few pictures from Dia de los Muertos which translates to 'A Day of The Dead' which his project was based on. I found this really interesting as it is something i've never heard of. Its a holiday in Mexico in which they celebrate life of their dead relatives. In which they have lots of food, music, they wear masks (Edric is using this idea for his photoshop which I really liked).

I then got sent out to buy the materials for paper mache to start making the masks for the photoshoot. Getting sent out to go and collect things, was quite exciting because if you was in the industry this is what you would have to do on a day to day basis. Find materials, trimmings anything that the designer might require.

I started papermaching balloons ready for the masks, this proved very time consuming. i then came up with the idea of modrocking the masks, which will then be shaped into a mask shape and it only takes 15 minutes and not long to dry. This is the advantage of having and assistant or helper, they can have over ideas that you might not even thought of.

What I have learned from Wed 21st April -
  • How important it is to be organised, this helps you not stress out and be on top of your work.
  • Have a diary and write down anything, that needs doing completing, finishing off, then you will not have to use all your brain energy of thinking 'what have I got to do next?'
  • To start applying for your placement early, one of the 3rd years advised me as there is so many people yet only limited places that you will achieve something from.
